“‘ONE’ is a project distinguished by its intelligent, considered use of materials, delivering a visually arresting design that is contemporary but not naturalistic - and ultimately inspirational in its vision for sustainable, forward thinking Garden Spaces”

Malcolm Anderson, RHS Head of Sustainability

Central to the ‘One Garden’s’ contemporary design are the K-BRIQs showcasing their sustainability in the majesty of their bright colour range in a series of interlinking raised flower beds and benches, and a contemplative pool. The inspiring garden took won the ‘Environment and Innovation’ Award, the ‘Best Show Garden’ Award and was the overall Gold medal winner.

With sustainability at its core, the 25m2 of recycled K-BRIQs are secured in a mortarless design which uses ropes to tie the bricks to the backing board, rather than a high carbon mortar or adhesive. Cleverly, this also allows the garden to be grow and to be reshaped over time as its needs evolve.

The recycled construction and demolition waste that constitutes over 90% of the K-BRIQ twinkles gently from the bricks and into the reflective water pool that adds gentle sound and visual interest.

The garden also incorporated environmentally sensitive hard landscaping, sustainable drainage prinicples, a rainwater friendly design and its planting was sourced from a range of local, UK nurseries.

Tythorne Gardens designed the garden as a creative space for a sustainability minded individual who happily lives independently and loves spending time encouraging nature and nurturing their plants. The garden encourages visitors to rethink traditional approaches, showing how sustainable materials and unconventional construction can successfully shape, small and meaningful domestic gardens.

“This year’s winning entry, powerfully illustrates how style and sustainability can not only co-exist, but elevate one another”

Michael Anderson, RHS Head of Sustainability
